How do your lips feel in the cold weather?

Lip appearance can be a significant indicator of ageing, so they deserve the same care and attention as the rest of our face. Like the eyes, the skin on and around the lips needs daily treatment to maintain a healthy skin balance and help slow signs of ageing.

Collagen, elasticity and hyaluronic acid are all naturally occurring in the skin, they help provide fullness and elasticity.  As we age, gracefully or even disgracefully like some of us, their production slows, which causes skin to sag and lose its structural shape.

If you’re anything like me you’ll get dry lips in the colder weather – for years I have put some form of balm on my lips at bedtime and lipstick or gloss throughout the day.

Like many of you I used Vaseline for years until I found out what it really was…..  Petroleum jelly, the main ingredient in Vaseline, is a by-product of oil refining.  It’s an unsustainable and unpleasant resource. It’s commonly used topically to cure everything from dehydrated, flaky skin to nappy rash.  Personally I’d rather not use it!

There are many schools of thought about how safe this ingredient is and it is actually banned in Switzerland, sadly they are the only country in the world to do so to date!

As for your skin, petroleum based ingredients like mineral oil, can create the false illusion of moisturised, hydrated skin, while blocking your pores. It’s water-repellent and not water-soluble, so creates a barrier and moisture cannot leave the skin. So while you might feel the instant gratification of a softened surface, you’re actually drying out your pores by keeping out air and moisture. What’s more, the thick texture makes it difficult to cleanse from the skin, so never slather mineral oil based product on an unwashed face if you want to avoid breakouts. It can seal in the dirt.

So what can we use to keep our lips soft and in good condition?  Here’s 5 tips to help your lips stay plump and gorgeous this winter:

  • Use a lip scrub to exfoliate or a treatment regularly.  Like all skin, lips need regular attention.
  • Stop smoking – smoking ages the lips and surrounding area more than most things – not to mention the other even more damaging things smoking can cause!
  • Stop licking your lips – this is very drying and will cause lips to chap in cold weather.
  • Apply lip stick, gloss or balm regularly but make sure the ingredients are not petroleum based
  • Opt for more natural ingredients in your lip products and check ingredients before purchasing.  Products containing coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter  and cocoa butter seal in moisture and don’t come with some of the risks of petroleum jelly or mineral oil.

I have been using a great new lip treatment developed by Arbonne International – my lips are smoother, firmer and plumper – see my before and after pictures below and on my Facebook page.  My lips are not getting as dry as they normally do at this time of year.  I will be giving away a tube of this wonder treatment to one lucky winner when the number of likes on my Facebook page reaches 300 – so only 94 to go!  Go and like my page now!
